Optical tricks and Victorian fun

Jonathan Ross’s interest in images is firmly based in his fascination with optical effects. An early supporter of Holography, Ross always maintained its possibilities as a fine art form although the technical momentum diverted holography towards security applications.

Ross’s collection of holographic artworks is one of the finest in Europe and he regularly exhibits prime examples to the public in his private gallery in central London.

Stereoscopic imagery and the technicalities involved in their manufacture was a natural adjunct to Ross’s interest in holography. An avid collector of photographs and early equipment, the Ross collection of stereographs is a fine and extensive archive and he is often consulted by museums and collectors across the world for advice.

The fact that most of the early subject matter for stereography was erotic, if not pornographic, in nature was generally regarded as a bonus!
