Pentax 70 MM F 2.4
Pancake Mix

by Andrew Kaiser

With the release of the K10D, Pentax has also unveiled a few interesting surprises in their lens lineup. Perhaps most interesting is the smc Pentax-DA 70mm F2.4 Limited lens; a specifically designed-for-digital 'pancake' style piece of optical equipment ideal for street shooting, landscapes, portraiture, and casual snapshot photography.

FOR YEARS, Pentax Limited lenses have taken a back seat in the hype department to Nikon glass and Canon's much talked about 'L-series' optics. But Pentax Limited glass measures up easily to the top offerings from Nikon, Canon, Olympus, and even Zeiss.

In use, the 70mm Limited produces sharp, contrasty results worthy of the Pentax namesake. Auto-focus is fast and accurate, or at least as fast and accurate as the SLR body will possibly allow. We wouldn't mind seeing a manual focus ring with a little more grip to it, but suppose that would defeat the purpose of the pancake design. Fortunately, despite its small size, Pentax still saw it fit to include a depth of field scale on the rotating lens element with easy to read f-stops.

The 70mm Limited offers a focal length equivalent to 107mm in 35mm format. A little long in most practical situations, but when shooting with D-SLR's one becomes used to that - how much mileage you get from the lens really all depends on your shooting style. On the plus side, to say the 70mm Limited is distinctive is a bit of an understatement. When attached to an SLR the lens protrudes well under an inch long. If you’re the kind of photographer that considers it an advantage to go unnoticed and blend in with the crowd, then this may just be the right choice.
