Dorthe Alstrup Doll Window

Critical Mass Awards
Dorthe Alstrup

American photographer Dorthe Alstrup specialises in staged reality: "What happens between the characters within the frame is never completely clear. The narrative is left unresolved. It is up to the viewer to use his or her imagination to build a narrative," she says of her eerie images. At first glance, they appear to be rather mundane vignettes of youth doing what youth does best: hanging out, messing around. But the odd settings and situations provoke further questions (Elaine Hake in First Post)

“It is up to the viewer
to use his or her imagination to build
a narrative”

Dorthe Alstrup is one of the entrants in Critical Mass 2007, an annual juried competition sponsored by Photolucida.

Every other Spring an international set of photographers and reviewers gather in Portland Oregon for a week-long celebration of photography. The mission: an increased understanding of the world through photography. By promoting in-depth, informed, and supportive dialogue between photographers, gallery owners, publishers and pundits of various sorts, Photolucida promotes the culture of photography. The next Portfolio Review event will take place April 12-15th, 2007.

An intensive four-day ‘portfolio review’ lies at the heart of the festival. Reviewers are selected for their experience, involvement, and commitment to advancing the work of emerging and mid-career artists. The majority represent small, mid-sized, and major venues or publishers devoted to photography as an artistic medium. Photographers at all levels of expertise are welcome.

The aim of Critical Mass and all Photolucida programming is to provide participants with career building opportunities and to promote the best emerging and mid-career artists working today. 2006 is the third year of Critical Mass.

Book Awards!
This year Photolucida will publish monographs for 2 or more artists selected from the top finalists. All book awards are reserved for artists without a previously published monograph.

Print Purchase Award!
This year there is also a Print Purchase Award, sponsored directly by Photolucida. A short list of potential Purchase Award artists from the highest vote-getters will be presented to the Portland Art Museum so they can select a print for their permanent collection. Photolucida will purchase the print from the artist and donate it to the Museum.
