The 2008 Pirelli Calendar
Photographer: Patrick Demarchelier

The thirty-fifth edition of the Pirelli calendar is set entirely in Shanghai: the picturesque streets of the old French Concession, the splendid gardens of the former British Legation, the mysterious and sensual atmosphere of forbidden China and the convulsive Nanjing Road.

Twenty-three portraits search for the Oriental myth of female beauty - perfection, purity and grace.

Chinese actress Maggie Cheung said: "Very often I find Western people seem to go for the more cliché Chinese faces: long hair, slanted eyes. All that has changed I think. Many Chinese women are graceful; I think we have an inner grace that's more rare than you find in the West."

Photographer Patrick Demarchelier, who also created the 2005 calendar, pictures above, said: "The casting was a fascinating mix between the West and the Orient: an interesting group of faces."
