THERE IS something for everyone in this auction. The list of artists reads like a history of photography. You can find Ansel Adam’s landscapes here, as well as Man Ray’s 1930 negative print - a portrait of Jacqueline Goddard (one of his favourite models) made using his revolutionary method of printing from autochrome.
Stieglitz’s The Steerage ($50-80,000) is the original vintage print as published in ‘the’ magazine of the times, Vanity Fair, in 1924. It includes editor’s pencil crop marks as well as Stieglitz note: ‘keep clean’. Marseille by László Moholy-Nagy from 1929 ($100,000-150,000) was taken from a transporter bridge which was featured in the artist’s film from the same year, Marseille Vieux Port.
If your budget doesn’t stretch quite that far, consider investing in a piece by a younger generation of photographers – like Loretta Lux whose Waving Girl is offered for $6-9,000, Cindy Sherman’s 2001 print of her Self-portrait as Lucille Ball ($5-7,000) or Matthew Pillbury’s Selected Television Images for $6-9,000.
